FAQs

What is Fireguardia?

Fireguardia is an engineering and manufacturing company specializing in chemical-free fire safety technology for consumer and industrial applications. Our patented, bio-based, non-carcinogenic fire retardant revolutionizes fire protection. â€‹

What materials are in the fire retardant?

Our products enforce a circular economy using sustainably sourced, previously used, and/or demolished materials. Our fire retardant does not rely on cancer-causing agents and may be used on skin, fabrics and wood. In the absence of toxins, our fire retardant does not release poisonous volatile organic compounds (VOC), vapors, fumes or smoke when exposed to flame -- our materials won't create hazmat waste. Our fire safety technology is safe for humans, pets, plants, trees, and wildlife.

Our patented chemical-free formula and applications do not perpetuate decabromodiphenyl ether, or decaBDE.

DecaBDE was fully banned in 2021 by the US Environmental Protection Agency after being linked to cancer, endocrine and thyroid issues, fetal and child development and neurobehavioral function and reproductive and immune system toxicity.

Why is this fire retardant groundbreaking?

Our fire retardant is non-toxic, without cancer-causing chemicals.

Current fire retardants rely on chemicals that are supposed to slow ignition and prevent fires, mostly used to meet public safety regulations. Agents of concern include organohalogen and organophosphate chemicals such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), organophosphate ester (OPEs), and chlorinated tris (TDCPP).

These fire retardants are used in a wide range of consumer goods including furniture, children’s products, electronics, building materials, wire and cables. Some fire retardant chemicals are associated with lowered IQ and hyperactivity in children as well as cancer, hormone disruption, and decreased fertility in adults and wildlife. Is your fire retardant safety certified?

Yes, Fireguardia's patented fire retardant is classified UL compliant by the world’s leading testing and certification company.

How does the fire retardant work?

Fireguardia products rely on thermal diffusivity, intumescence and ablation.

An intumescent is a substance that swells as a result of heat exposure, thus increasing in volume and decreasing in density. Intumescent materials used in fire protection increase their volume significantly under the influence of heat -- at approximately 392° F / 200° C.

Our product actively and passively increases resistance when exposed to extreme heat -- the material expands and as it expands, acts as an insulator. Our product is activated at around 212° F / 100°C and withstands temperatures well beyond 5972° F / 3300° C with resilience over multiple iterations from the instant of heat exposure to beyond 30 mins, depending on the scenario.

What type of products will be available?

Fireguardia has a suite of non-carcinogenic fire protection products:

  • Consumer fire safety device

  • Residential fire safety systems

  • Wildfire and Wild Urban Interface (WUI) protection systems

  • Fireproof textile

  • Intumescent coating

  • Engineered wood

Our formula is so adaptable we can generate an array of specific uses for households, industry, the military and space exploration.
